Darwin Phelps was an important American politician. He was born on April 17, 1807, and passed away on December 14, 1879. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Pennsylvania.

Darwin Phelps: Early Life and Education

Darwin Phelps was born in East Granby, Connecticut. Sadly, he became an orphan when he was very young. He then moved to Portage, Ohio, to live with his grandparents. There, he finished his early studies. Later, he went to Western University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Becoming a Lawyer and Community Leader

After college, Darwin Phelps studied law in Pittsburgh. He became a lawyer in 1835. He started his law practice in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. He was very active in his community. He served on the board of trustees for Kittanning Academy. He was also a member of the town council in 1841 and 1848.

Phelps was elected as the "burgess" (like a mayor) of Kittanning many times. He held this role in 1844, 1845, 1849, 1852, 1855, 1858, 1859, and 1861. In 1856, he ran for auditor general as a Republican but did not win. He was also a delegate at the 1860 Republican National Convention. This was a big meeting where the Republican Party chose its candidate for president.

Service in the Military and State Government

During the American Civil War, Darwin Phelps served in the military. In 1862, he was a major in the Twenty-second Regiment. This was part of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia. After his military service, he became a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1865. This meant he helped make laws for the state of Pennsylvania.

Serving in the U.S. Congress

Darwin Phelps was elected to the Forty-first Congress as a Republican. This meant he represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. He served from March 4, 1869, to March 3, 1871. He decided not to run for re-election in 1870.

After his time in Congress, he returned home. Darwin Phelps passed away in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, in 1879. He was buried in Kittanning Cemetery.
