Darío del Niño Jesús Castrillón Hoyos (born July 4, 1929 – died May 18, 2018) was an important cardinal in the Catholic Church from Colombia. He served as the leader of the Congregation for the Clergy from 1996 to 2006. He also led the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei from 2000 until he retired in 2009. He became a cardinal in 1998.

Early Life and Education

Darío Castrillón Hoyos was born in Medellín, Colombia. He studied to become a priest at seminaries in Antioquia and Santa Rosa de Osos. Later, he went to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He became a priest on October 26, 1952.

At the Gregorian University, he earned a special degree in canon law. This is the set of rules and laws of the Catholic Church. He also studied religious sociology, which looks at how religion affects society. He learned about political economics and ethical economics too. Castrillón Hoyos also studied at the University of Louvain in Belgium.

Early Church Work in Colombia

After his studies, he returned to Colombia. From 1954 to 1971, he worked as a curate in two small country parishes in Yarumal. A curate is a priest who helps the main priest of a parish.

He also directed several church programs, like Cursillos and the Legion of Mary. He became an official in the diocesan curia of Santa Rosa de Osos. This is like the administrative office for a diocese. He also directed schools that used radio to teach. In 1959, he became a delegate for Catholic Action, a group for Catholic lay people. He also helped young Catholic workers. Before becoming a bishop, he worked on teaching catechism and served as the general secretary of the Colombian Episcopal Conference. This is a group of all the bishops in Colombia.

Becoming a Bishop

On June 2, 1971, Darío Castrillón Hoyos was chosen to be the Coadjutor Bishop of Pereira. This meant he would help the current bishop and take over when that bishop retired. He also became the Titular Bishop of Villa Regis.

He officially became a bishop on July 18, 1971. Archbishop Angelo Palmas led the ceremony. On July 1, 1976, he became the main Bishop of Pereira.

Helping Others as Bishop

While he was Bishop of Pereira, Castrillón Hoyos was known for helping people. He would walk the streets at night to help feed children who had been abandoned. He also worked against liberation theology, a way of thinking that was popular among some church leaders in Latin America.

On December 16, 1991, he was made Archbishop of Bucaramanga. He stayed in that role until June 15, 1996. Then, he moved to the Roman Curia in Rome. The Roman Curia is the main administrative body of the Catholic Church. He became the Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.

Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal-Deacon on February 21, 1998. This happened during a special ceremony called a consistory. Two days later, he was given the title of Prefect of the Congregation for Clergy. This meant he was the head of the office that deals with priests.

On October 26, 1998, he served as a special representative for the Pope. He went to the signing of a peace agreement between Peru and Ecuador. This agreement helped settle a long-standing border dispute between the two countries.

On April 14, 2000, he became the President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei. This office works with traditional Catholic groups.

In 2004, he was appointed Grand Prior of the Constantinian Order of St George.

Papal Conclave and Retirement

After Pope John Paul II passed away, Cardinal Castrillón participated in the 2005 papal conclave. This is where cardinals gather to elect a new Pope. He was even considered a possible candidate for Pope himself. Pope Benedict XVI was elected and confirmed Castrillón as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.

On October 31, 2006, Cardinal Castrillón resigned from his role as head of the Congregation for the Clergy. On September 13, 2007, he spoke for Pope Benedict about a document called Summorum Pontificum.

On February 23, 2007, Castrillón became the Protodeacon. This means he was the most senior Cardinal-Deacon. He held this position until March 1, 2008, when he became a Cardinal-Priest.

Later Years

Cardinal Castrillón fully retired on July 8, 2009. On the same day, Pope Benedict issued a document called Ecclesiae Unitatem. This document changed how the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei worked. It became part of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos passed away on May 18, 2018, in Rome, Italy.
