Dasylirion durangense, often called "sotol," is a cool plant that lives for many years. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family, which also includes asparagus! This plant grows naturally in parts of Mexico, especially in Durango, Chihuahua, and Sonora.

It's quite similar to another plant called D. wheeleri. Some experts even think it might be a type of D. wheeleri.

What the Sotol Plant Looks Like

The sotol plant has a large group of long, stiff leaves that grow from its base, like a big rosette. These leaves can be over 1 meter (about 3 feet) long! They have sharp, curved spines along their edges, so you have to be careful.

When it's time to flower, a tall stalk can grow up to 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) high from the center of the plant. This stalk has many small flowers that are pollinated by the wind.

Sometimes, you might see the name of this plant spelled a bit differently, like "duranguense" or "duranguensis." But the correct spelling is "durangense."

How People Use the Sotol Plant

For a very long time, the native people living in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in Mexico have used the sotol plant. These groups include the Tarahumara, Pima Bajo, and Tepehuan people.

They use the sweet, young flowering stalk of the plant to make a traditional drink, which they also call sotol. This drink is an important part of their culture.

Besides making drinks, these communities also use the leaves of the sotol plant. They carefully remove the sharp spines from the edges. Then, they use the strong leaves to weave beautiful baskets, create decorations for holidays, and make many other useful items.
