Dateland's Past: A Road Stop and Training Ground

Dateland started as a simple stop for travelers in the 1920s. It was a place where people could rest during their journeys.

World War II History

During World War II, Dateland became very important for the military. General Patton used the desert area around Dateland for training camps. These camps were called Camp Horn and Camp Hyder.

In 1942, three airstrips were built in Dateland. These were used to train pilots flying B25 Bombers. One of these was the Dateland Air Force Auxiliary Field. Even today, the U.S. military sometimes uses the Dateland area for training exercises. Troops who served in places like Iraq and Afghanistan have trained here.

Dates and Sugar Rationing

Also during World War II, sugar was hard to get because of rationing. This meant people couldn't buy as much sugar as they wanted. Because of this, dates became a popular sweet treat. This helped the date industry in Arizona grow a lot.

After the War

After the war, the airfield closed down. In the 1970s, the land was divided into smaller pieces for building. Most of Dateland today still has many empty lots.

Dateland's Desert Climate

Dateland has a very sunny climate all year round. This is because of the way the air moves and the high pressure in the area. It has a desert climate, which is sometimes called "Bwh" on climate maps.
