How Dave Scott Started Dancing
Dave Scott grew up in Compton, California. He was very tall, at 6 feet 4 inches, and surprisingly, he never took a formal dance class. He started dancing as a hobby when he was 15 years old.
Scott learned to dance by watching musicals, movies about b-boys (breakdancers), and music videos. He was a huge fan of Michael Jackson and said the pop star was one of his biggest inspirations. He also looked up to hip-hop dance pioneers like Stefan "Mr. Wiggles" Clemente and Timothy "Popin' Pete" Solomon.
As a teenager, he started his own b-boy crew and would compete against other crews in his neighborhood. After high school, he went to Weber State University on a basketball scholarship and earned a degree in business. His dance career started by chance when someone saw him dancing in a club and asked him to replace a dancer on a concert tour. After that, he moved back to California to start his professional career.
From Hobby to Hollywood
Scott began his career by dancing on music tours and in videos. This helped him meet people in the dance world, and he soon started teaching classes and creating dances for movies and TV shows. He described his dance style as aggressive, melodic, and energetic.
He worked with many famous singers, including Ginuwine, B2K, Tyrese, and Brian McKnight. He was also the choreographer for the teen R&B group Mindless Behavior, helping to create their image and dance style.
In 2012, he helped choreograph the video game The Hip Hop Dance Experience for Ubisoft.
Creating Dances for Movies
Scott's work with the R&B group B2K led to one of his biggest projects. He was the choreographer for the movie You Got Served, which starred the members of the group. The movie was a huge hit, and in 2004, Scott won an American Choreography Award for his work on the film.
After the movie's success, he released a DVD called You Got Served: Take it to the Streets. The DVD taught fans how to do the dance moves from the movie.
He also co-choreographed the movie Step Up 2: The Streets. For this film, he won a Fred and Adele Astaire Award in 2008 for Best Choreography. His other movie credits include Stomp the Yard, Dance Flick, and Battle of the Year: The Dream Team.
Appearing on Television
Scott shared his talent on many popular TV shows. He was a guest choreographer on Step It Up and Dance and Dancing with the Stars.
Starting in the third season, he became a regular hip-hop choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance. He created many memorable routines for the contestants on the show.
Teaching the Next Generation
Scott was passionate about teaching dance. He worked with the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and was a faculty member at famous dance studios like the Millennium Dance Complex and Broadway Dance Center. He also taught at The PULSE on Tour, a traveling dance event for young dancers.
