David Arthur Allen (born October 29, 1935 – died May 24, 2014) was a famous English cricket player. He played for Gloucestershire from 1953 to 1972. He also played in 39 big international games called Test matches for the England team.

David Allen's Cricket Career

David Allen was a right-arm off-break bowler. This means he spun the ball away from a right-handed batter. He had a very short run-up before bowling.

He was first chosen to play for England in 1959. In 1960, he was named the Cricket Writers' Club Young Cricketer of the Year. This was a big award for young players.

Playing Around the World

David Allen got to travel a lot for cricket. He played in every country that had a Test cricket team at that time. This was a huge achievement for any player.

He was also a good batter, not just a bowler. His batting average in Test matches was quite good. He even scored 50 runs without being out in a game against Australia in 1965-66.

Famous Moments in Games

One famous moment happened in 1963 at Lord's cricket ground. England was playing against the West Indies. The game was very close.

David Allen had to bat the last two balls of the game. He faced a very fast bowler named Wes Hall. Allen managed to block the balls and save the game, making it a draw. He was protecting his teammate, Colin Cowdrey, who was batting with a broken arm!

Another time, in 1961, he took three quick wickets against Australia. But then, an Australian player named Alan Davidson hit him for 20 runs in one over. England's captain took Allen off bowling. Australia ended up winning that game.

Despite that, David Allen played against all the Test-playing nations of his time. He bowled a huge number of overs, especially during tours. For example, in India and Pakistan in 1961-62, he bowled 482 overs in just eight Test matches!

After Cricket

After he stopped playing cricket, David Allen stayed involved with the sport. He became a member of the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club committee. In 2011, he was chosen as the club's president.

David Allen passed away in May 2014. He is remembered as a dedicated and talented cricketer for both Gloucestershire and England.
