David Barrufet Bofill (born on June 4, 1970, in Barcelona, Spain) is a famous former Spanish handball goalkeeper. He is now a handball coach. He played his entire career for FC Barcelona. Many people think he is one of the best goalkeepers ever. In 2001, he was voted the second-best player in the world.

Early Life and Playing Career

David Barrufet started playing handball at just 8 years old. He played at SAFA Horta school in Barcelona. When he was 14, he joined FC Barcelona. He played in their younger teams until 1988. That year, he joined the professional team.

Barrufet played for FC Barcelona for many years. He also played for the Spanish national team. He held the record for the most matches played for the Spanish national team until 2021. That's when another player, Alberto Entrerríos, played more games.

Retirement from Playing

On February 8, 2010, David Barrufet announced he would stop playing handball. This was at the end of the 2009-10 season. To honor him, FC Barcelona decided to retire his shirt number, 16. This means no other player at the club will wear that number. He won more than 70 titles with FC Barcelona during his career.

He first retired from the national team after the 2008 Olympics. However, he decided to play again after Valero Rivera suggested it.
