David Peter Bergland (born June 4, 1935 – died June 3, 2019) was an American politician. He was a key figure in the Libertarian Party. He ran for President of the United States in 1984. He also led the party's main committee twice.

David Bergland's Early Life
David Peter Bergland was born on June 4, 1935. His hometown was Mapleton, Iowa. His parents were Gwendolyn and Cedores P. Bergland.
Bergland's Political Journey
David Bergland was a lawyer from California. He ran for different political jobs many times. He always ran as a Libertarian. This party believes in a lot of personal freedom. They also think the government should be small.
In 1974, he tried to become the California Attorney General. This job is like the state's top lawyer. He ran as a special "write-in" candidate. Later, in 1978, he ran for the California State Senate. He finished third in that race.
Bergland was chosen to run for Vice President in 1976. He was on the same team as Roger MacBride. They received about 172,553 votes. This was a small part of all the votes.
He was also the national leader of the Libertarian Party. He held this important job twice. First, from 1977 to 1981. Then again from 1998 to 2000.
In 1980, Bergland ran for the United States Senate. He got over 200,000 votes in that election.
His biggest campaign was in 1984. He was the Libertarian Party's choice for President of the United States. His running mate was Jim Lewis. Together, they received 228,111 votes.
After his own campaigns, Bergland continued to be active. He helped manage Harry Browne's presidential campaign in 2000. Browne was also a Libertarian candidate. In 2006, Bergland supported the Free State Project. This project encourages people who believe in freedom to move to New Hampshire.
Bergland's Ideas and Writings
In the 1980s, David Bergland wrote a book. It was called Libertarianism in One Lesson. This book helped explain what Libertarianism is all about. It shared his ideas on freedom and government.
His Final Years
David Bergland passed away on June 3, 2019. He was almost 84 years old. He died from prostate cancer.
