About David Berglas
David Berglas went to school in different countries across Europe. He was Jewish and had to leave Germany for Britain when he was 11 years old because of the Nazis.
When he was older, he wanted to help during World War II. He joined the US Army's Intelligence Service, even though he was a bit younger than the usual age. He was accepted because he could speak fluent German and had some military training. He served for about 18 months at the end of the war, which he described as an "adventure." After the war, he studied textiles, planning to join his family's business.
David Berglas became interested in magic in 1947 after meeting another magician named Ken Brooke. Magic quickly became his main hobby. For about five years, he also studied psychotherapy, which is a type of therapy that helps people with their thoughts and feelings. He focused on medical hypnosis.
David Berglas passed away in London on November 3, 2023, when he was 97 years old.
His Magic Career
In 1999, David Berglas started a non-profit group called the Foundation for Promoting the Art of Magic (FP-AM). Famous magicians like Uri Geller, David Copperfield, and Derren Brown have won this award. In 2014, David Berglas himself received the award in a surprise moment!
The British Magical Society, which is the oldest magic club in the UK, also gives out 'The David Berglas Trophy' every year to top British magicians. The Berglas Effect
In the 1950s, David Berglas created his most famous trick, "The Berglas Effect." It's often called the "Holy Grail" of card magic. In this trick, a magician seems to let someone freely choose any playing card and any position in a deck. Then, the chosen card is found exactly at that chosen spot in a random deck of cards. It looks like pure magic! This trick was first named "The Berglas Effect" in a book in 1984.
