David John Bryant (born October 27, 1931 – died August 27, 2020) was a famous English bowls player. He is often called the greatest bowls player of all time.

David won many important titles. He was a three-time World Outdoor singles champion. He also won the World Indoor singles title three times. Plus, he earned four gold medals in singles at the Commonwealth Games. In total, he won an amazing 19 gold medals at World and Commonwealth events!

David Bryant's Early Life and Bowls Journey

David Bryant was born in Clevedon, North Somerset, England. He came from a family that loved bowls. His grandfather helped start the Clevedon Bowling Club. David's father, Reginald Bryant, won three national titles in bowls.

David joined the Clevedon club when he was 16 years old. In his very first season, he won the Clevedon Bowls handicap competition. This was just the start of his amazing career.

David Bryant's Bowls Achievements

David Bryant became a legend in the sport of bowls. He won many championships both outdoors and indoors.

World Outdoor Bowls Championships

David won the first-ever World Outdoor singles title in 1966. This event took place in Kyeemagh, Australia. Overall, he earned five gold medals in these championships. These included three singles titles, one triples title, and one team title. From 1966 to 1988, he won a total of eleven medals. These included three silver and three bronze medals, showing his consistent skill.

Commonwealth Games Success

David Bryant won two gold medals at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia. He won in both the singles and fours events. This success led to him winning four singles gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. In total, he won five Commonwealth Games gold medals.

His singles gold medals were in 1962, 1970, 1974, and 1978. There was no bowls competition at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. This might have stopped him from winning a fifth singles gold.

World Indoor Bowls Championships

David also became a legend in indoor bowls. He won nine World Indoor Championships. Three of these were in singles. He won six pairs titles with his partner, Tony Allcock. Their partnership was very successful.

National Bowls Titles

David Bryant also helped his county, Somerset, win the Middleton Cup many times. One of his teammates was Bobby Black, a former Scottish football player.

Besides the Middleton Cup, David won 16 National Champion titles for Somerset.

He was well-known for smoking a tobacco pipe while he played bowls. In 1986, he even received an award for Pipe Smoker of the Year. His father, Reginald Bryant, was also a successful bowls player. He won three national titles in the fours/rinks events.
