David Chillingworth's Early Life and Schooling
David Chillingworth was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1951. He grew up in Northern Ireland. He went to two schools there: Portora Royal School and the Royal Belfast Academical Institution.
After school, he studied classics (which means ancient Greek and Roman history, language, and culture) at Trinity College, Dublin. He earned a degree in 1973. Then, he studied theology (the study of religious faith and practice) at Oriel College, Oxford, and got another degree in 1975. He then spent a year training to become a church minister at Ripon College Cuddesdon.
Becoming a Church Leader
David Chillingworth became a deacon in the Church of Ireland in 1976. Two years later, in 1978, he became a priest.
During his time as a priest, he often worked on issues of peace and understanding, especially in areas where there was conflict between different groups. From 1979 to 1983, he also worked as the Church of Ireland Youth Officer, helping young people. Before moving to Scotland in 2005, he was the rector (head priest) of Seagoe Parish Church in Portadown for 19 years. He also held important roles like Archdeacon of Dromore and Dean of Dromore.
His Time as a Bishop
On March 5, 2004, David Chillingworth became a bishop at St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth. He then became the bishop for the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. This made him one of the seven main bishops in the Scottish Episcopal Church. It was a bit unusual because he had spent most of his life in Northern Ireland and had never worked in Scotland before.
On June 13, 2009, the other bishops chose David Chillingworth to be the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church. He held this important role while also continuing to be a diocesan bishop. He retired from both his roles as Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and as Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church at the end of July 2017.
Since 2018, he has been able to help with church services in the Diocese of Edinburgh.
