David Robert Chillingworth (born 23 June 1951) is an Anglican bishop. He was a leader in the Scottish Episcopal Church. He served as the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane from 2004 to 2017. He was also the top leader, called the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, from 2009 to 2016.

Early Life and Education

David Chillingworth was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1951. He grew up in Northern Ireland. He went to Portora Royal School and the Royal Belfast Academical Institution.

College Studies

He studied classics (ancient Greek and Roman history and languages) at Trinity College, Dublin. He earned his first degree in 1973. Later, he studied theology (the study of religious faith) at Oriel College, Oxford. He received another degree from the University of Oxford in 1975.

Training for Ministry

After his studies, he went to Ripon College Cuddesdon. This is a special college for people training to become Anglican ministers. He trained there for one year.

Becoming a Church Leader

David Chillingworth became a deacon in the Church of Ireland in 1976. Two years later, in 1978, he became a priest.

Working for Peace

During his time as a priest, he focused on bringing people together. He worked on solving problems and helping people get along. From 1979 to 1983, he was also the youth officer for the Church of Ireland.

Serving in Parishes

Before moving to Scotland, he worked for 19 years at Seagoe Parish Church in Portadown. He also held important roles like Archdeacon of Dromore. From 1995 to 2002, he was the Dean of Dromore.

Becoming a Bishop

On 5 March 2004, David Chillingworth became a bishop. This special ceremony took place at St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth.

Bishop in Scotland

He became the bishop of the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. This made him one of the seven main bishops in the Scottish Episcopal Church. It was a bit unusual because he had not worked in Scotland before. He had spent most of his life in Northern Ireland.

Leading the Church

On 13 June 2009, the other bishops chose him to be the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church. This is the highest leadership role in the church. He held this job while also being a bishop.

During his time as Primus, the church made some changes to its rules about marriage in 2017. He retired from his roles as Bishop and Primus in July 2017. Since 2018, he has continued to help out in the Diocese of Edinburgh.

About His Family

David Chillingworth is married to Alison. They have three children together: one daughter and two sons.
