David Draiman's Early Life
David Michael Draiman was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on March 13, 1973. His parents were Jewish. His father, YJ, worked in real estate and owned small businesses. David's brother, Benjamin, is a musician who lives in Israel. His grandmother, Ziona, came from a Yemenite Jewish family that moved to Israel a long time ago.
Even though his parents were not very strict about their faith, they sent David to Orthodox schools. He often visited Israel when he was young. He went to five different Jewish day schools. One of these was Valley Torah High School in Los Angeles, where he started his first band.
At one school, he was asked to leave because he wanted to be a normal teenager. He found the strict religious rules difficult. David later went to Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago and finished high school in 1991. After that, he spent a year studying in Kiryat Ye'arim, near Jerusalem, Israel.
In 1992, David returned to the U.S. and began studying law at Loyola University Chicago. He graduated in 1996 with degrees in Political Science, Philosophy, and Business. He thought about becoming a lawyer, but he realized he only liked criminal defense law. He didn't want to "lie for a living" to protect criminals.
While studying, he also worked as a bank teller and in sales. After graduating, he managed a healthcare facility for five years. He left this job to join Disturbed, which caused some tension with his grandfather.

David has helped write many of Disturbed's most popular songs. These include "Stupify", "Down with the Sickness", "Indestructible", and "Inside the Fire". In 2006, Hit Parader magazine ranked him as the 42nd best metal singer of all time.
When Disturbed took a break from 2011 to 2015, David started a new band called Device. He worked on this industrial metal project with Geno Lenardo. Device released their only album in 2013. Disturbed then reunited and released new albums. These included Immortalized in 2015 and Evolution in 2018.
