David Carl Drummond (born March 6, 1963) is an American business leader and former lawyer. Before joining Google in 2002, Drummond worked at a law firm and was a chief financial officer for a software company called SmartForce. He retired from Alphabet on January 31, 2020.

David Drummond's Early Career

David Drummond studied history at Santa Clara University and then earned his law degree from Stanford Law School. He became a lawyer in California in 1989.

His first connection with Google was in 1998. At that time, he worked for a technology law firm and was Google's very first outside lawyer. He helped Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, get funding and officially start their company.

Before joining Google full-time, Drummond was the chief financial officer (CFO) of a software company called SmartForce from 1999 to 2002.

Leading Legal Work at Google

In February 2002, David Drummond joined Google as a vice president. He quickly became a key leader, taking on roles like senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer. He kept these important jobs when Google reorganized into Alphabet Inc. in October 2015. He also served as the secretary for both Google and Alphabet starting in 2002.

During his time at Google, Drummond was involved in many important legal matters for the company. He helped Google handle major business deals, including buying YouTube, Android, DoubleClick, and Motorola Mobility. He also played a role in Google's decision to leave China in 2010. Drummond is known for supporting freedom of speech and diversity in the workplace.

Important Legal Cases

In 2005, Drummond and Google settled a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC had concerns about how Google handled stock options for employees. Both Google and Drummond agreed to follow securities laws in the future without admitting any wrongdoing or paying a fine.

Drummond and other Google executives were part of a trial in Italy that started in 2009. The case was about a video of a child being bullied that was uploaded to Google Video in 2006. Google removed the video once they were told about it by authorities. In 2010, Drummond and two other Google executives were found guilty of privacy violations, but these convictions were overturned in December 2012. This meant they were cleared of the charges.

Board Memberships

David Drummond joined the board of directors for Uber in August 2013. This happened after Google Ventures, a part of Google, invested a lot of money in Uber. He later left the Uber board in August 2016 due to business reasons.

He also served on the board of Crisis Text Line, which is a non-profit organization, from 2012 to 2018. In 2014, Drummond became a board member at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, a large investment firm.

Retirement from Alphabet

On January 10, 2020, it was announced that David Drummond would retire from Alphabet, effective January 31, 2020. He did not receive an exit package. In the months before his retirement announcement, Drummond sold over $200 million of his Alphabet stock.
