Playing Basketball in College
David Henderson grew up in Drewry, North Carolina. After finishing high school in 1982, he was asked to play basketball for Duke University by coach Mike Krzyzewski.
During his time at Duke, Henderson was a very important player. He either started games or was a key player coming off the bench. In his final year, he was one of the team captains. He started all 39 games and scored about 14 points per game. He helped lead the Duke Blue Devils team to the national championship game in 1986, but they didn't win.
In 1986, Henderson graduated from Duke with a degree in economics.
Playing Basketball Professionally
After college, David Henderson played professional basketball for 10 years.
He was first chosen by the Washington Bullets in the 1986 NBA draft. He spent his first year playing for the Albany Patroons in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). During the 1987–88 season, he played 22 games for the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, where he scored about 6 points per game.
Henderson then spent the next 8 years playing basketball in other countries. He played in France, Israel, and Turkey. In 1991, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.
Coaching Basketball
After he stopped playing, David Henderson became an assistant coach at Duke in 1997. The Duke Blue Devils won the ACC championship in each of the three seasons he was an assistant coach. In 1999, they finished second in the nation.
In 2000, Henderson became the head coach for the men's basketball team at the University of Delaware. He took over from another former Duke assistant coach, Mike Brey.
Henderson was the head coach at Delaware for six years. In his first season, his team had a 20–10 record and lost in the championship game of the America East conference. After that first season, Delaware moved to a tougher league called the Colonial Athletic Association. His team reached the tournament semifinals for the next two years, and the quarterfinals in his fourth year. After a couple of seasons where the team didn't win as much, Henderson left his coaching role after the 2005–06 season.
Scouting Basketball Talent
In the summer of 2006, David Henderson was hired by the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers to be a scout. A scout's job is to find and evaluate new players.
As of 2025, he still looks for new players for the Cavaliers. During his time with Cleveland, he has been part of all their yearly player drafts. He also won an NBA championship ring in 2015 when the Cavaliers won the championship.
