David Irons' Football Journey
Starting His College Career
David Irons began his college football journey at Butler Community College in 2001. Sadly, he couldn't play that first season because of a knee injury. He had to have surgery.
Playing for Butler Community College
In 2002, David returned to the field. He made 45 tackles and caught two interceptions. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player. In 2003, he helped his team, the Butler Grizzlies, win a national championship! He had 59 tackles, three interceptions, and broke up nine passes.
Playing for Auburn University
David moved to Auburn University in 2004. Unfortunately, he injured his knee again before the season started. This meant he couldn't play during Auburn's perfect, undefeated season that year.
He came back strong in 2005. He started in eleven games and was named to the All-SEC Second-team. This means he was recognized as one of the best players in his college conference. He made 48 tackles and broke up 11 passes. Because of his past knee injuries, David was given an extra year to play college football. He had already earned his first college degree. He started studying for a master's degree to keep playing.
Before the 2006 season, David was named to the All-SEC First-team by the coaches. He was also on the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the best defensive back in college football. He finished the 2006 season with 39 tackles, 11 pass break-ups, and two interceptions. He was again named to the All-SEC Second-team by the coaches.
Professional Football Career
After college, David Irons joined the Atlanta Falcons. In 2008, he had another knee injury. This injury was serious enough that he was placed on "injured reserve." This means he couldn't play for the rest of the season. He left the team in 2009.
Family Ties in Football
David Irons comes from a family of football players. His brother, Kenny Irons, also played football at Auburn and was drafted into the NFL. David is also the nephew of Gerald Irons and Leroy Jackson, who both played professional football. His cousins, Grant Irons, Jarrett Irons, and Paul Irons, also played the sport.
