College Football Journey
Starting at Butler Community College
David Irons began his college football career in 2001. He joined Butler Community College. Sadly, he could not play that first season. He had a knee injury and needed surgery.
In the 2002 season, David played well. He made 45 tackles and caught two interceptions. A tackle is when you stop an opponent with the ball. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an opponent.
In 2003, David helped his team, the BCC Grizzlies. They won an NJCAA National Championship. He made 59 tackles, had three interceptions, and broke up nine passes. Breaking up a pass means stopping it from reaching the receiver.
Playing for Auburn University
David moved to Auburn University in 2004. Before the season started, he injured his knee again. This meant he could not play in Auburn's perfect 2004 season. The team won all their games that year.
He returned to play in 2005. David started in eleven games. He was named to the Associated Press (AP) All-SEC Second-team. He made 48 tackles and broke up 11 passes.
Because of his knee injuries, David asked for an extra year to play. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) agreed. He had already earned his first college degree. To keep playing, he started studying for a master's degree in 2006.
Before the 2006 season, David was named to the Coaches All-SEC First-team. He was also on the Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List. This award goes to the best defensive back in college football. David finished the 2006 season with 39 tackles, 11 pass break-ups, and two interceptions. He was again named to the Coaches All-SEC Second-team.
Professional Football Career
David Irons joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. In 2008, he had another knee injury. This injury was serious enough that he was placed on "injured reserve." This means a player cannot play for the rest of the season. The Falcons released him from the team on July 28, 2009.

David's brother, Kenny Irons, also played football at Auburn. Kenny was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2007 NFL draft. David is also related to other football players. His uncles are Gerald Irons and Leroy Jackson. His cousins are Grant Irons, Jarrett Irons, and Paul Irons.
