David Saul Landes (born April 29, 1924 – died August 17, 2013) was a well-known professor. He taught about economics and history at Harvard University. He wrote many important books. Some of his famous books include Revolution in Time and The Wealth and Poverty of Nations. His books often explored why some countries became rich and others stayed poor. Some people said his work focused too much on Europe. He agreed, explaining that Europe was where many big economic changes first happened.

About David Landes's Life and Work
David Landes was a very dedicated student and scholar.
His Education and Early Career
David earned his first degree from City College of New York in 1942. Later, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1953. During World War II, before he joined the army, David learned about cryptanalysis. This is the skill of breaking secret codes. He worked for the Signal Corps. His job was to figure out secret messages from Japan.
His Important Contributions
David Landes was a respected member of several important groups. These included the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the United States National Academy of Sciences. He was also part of the American Philosophical Society. Historian Niall Ferguson called David Landes one of his "most revered mentors." David's son, Richard Landes, is also a historian and author.
