David Fraser Nolan (born November 23, 1943 – died November 21, 2010) was an American activist and politician. He helped start the Libertarian Party in the United States. He even hosted the first meeting in 1971 where the party began. Later, Nolan held many important jobs within the party. He was the leader of the National Committee and helped write the party's rules and ideas.
Nolan is also famous for creating the Nolan Chart. This chart helps people understand different political ideas better. Instead of just "left" or "right," it shows two main types of freedom: economic freedom and social freedom. The Nolan Chart is still popular today. Millions of copies have been shared, including as the "World's Smallest Political Quiz."
David Nolan's Early Life and School
David Nolan was born in Washington, D.C., on November 23, 1943. He grew up in the state of Maryland. When he was in high school, he learned about libertarianism from writers like Ayn Rand and Robert A. Heinlein.
He went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1965, he earned a degree in political science. While at MIT, he helped create a group called M.I.T. Students for Goldwater. This group supported Senator Barry Goldwater for president in 1964.
Nolan's Political Work
In 1969, David Nolan was part of a group called Young Americans for Freedom. Many people who believed in libertarian ideas tried to change the group's direction. Some left after a disagreement. Nolan stayed with the group, even though he agreed with some of the radical ideas.
In 1971, Nolan felt that the government was making too many rules. President Richard Nixon had put controls on prices and wages. Nolan also thought the Vietnam War was a bad idea. These events made Nolan and his friends decide to start a new political party.
They had already started a group called the Committee to Form a Libertarian Party. They joined with other groups who believed in individual freedom. On December 11, 1971, they officially started the Libertarian Party.
Nolan ran for political office several times as a Libertarian. In 2006, he ran for the United States House of Representatives in Arizona. He did not win, but he received some votes. In 2010, he ran for the United States Senate election in Arizona. He received about 63,000 votes.
In his later years, Nolan felt that the Libertarian Party had changed too much. He thought they were not focusing enough on their original ideas. He believed the party had become too careful and was afraid to speak out strongly.
In 2009, Nolan supported the Free State Project. This project encouraged 20,000 Libertarians to move to New Hampshire. The goal was to create a place where people could experience more freedom in their daily lives.
David Nolan passed away from a stroke in Tucson, Arizona, on November 21, 2010.
