Early Life and Education
David Szalay was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1974. His mother was Canadian, and his father was Hungarian. His family later moved to Beirut, a city in Lebanon. However, they had to leave Lebanon because of a conflict. They then moved to London, England, where David attended Sussex House School. He later studied at the University of Oxford.
After finishing his studies, Szalay worked in sales in London. He then moved to Brussels, Belgium. Later, he moved to Pécs in Hungary. He made these moves to follow his dream of becoming a writer.
Becoming a Published Author
David Szalay has written many radio plays for the BBC, a famous broadcasting company. His 2018 book of short stories, Turbulence, started as a series of short radio programs. The twelve stories in Turbulence follow different people on flights around the world. The book explores how families and friendships connect globally in our modern world.
Award-Winning Books
Szalay won the Betty Trask Award for his first novel, London and the South-East. He also received the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize for this book. Since then, he has written other novels, including Innocent (2009) and Spring (2011). His novel Flesh (2025) recently won the Booker Prize.
Another collection of his short stories, All That Man Is, was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize in 2016. It also won the Gordon Burn Prize that same year. Critics have praised his writing style. The Telegraph newspaper included him in their 2010 list of top British writers under 40. He was also featured in the 2013 Granta Best of Young British Novelists list.
