David Cecil MacAlister Tomlinson (born May 7, 1917 – died June 24, 2000) was a famous English actor. He starred in movies, on stage, and on TV. Many people remember him for his roles in classic Disney films.

He played the strict father George Banks in Mary Poppins. He was also the funny magician Professor Emelius Browne in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Another well-known role was Peter Thorndyke in The Love Bug. David Tomlinson was honored as a Disney Legend in 2002. This award celebrates people who have made a big impact on Disney.

Early Life and Start in Acting

David Tomlinson was born in Henley-on-Thames, England, on May 7, 1917. His father was a lawyer. David went to Tonbridge School. After school, he joined the Grenadier Guards for a short time.

He started acting in school plays and local shows. His first movie was Quiet Wedding in 1940. His acting career paused when World War II began. He joined the RAF as a Flight Lieutenant. During the war, he learned to fly planes in Canada. He also became a flying instructor in the UK. Even while serving, he appeared in three more movies.

David loved flying even after the war. Once, while doing cool tricks in a Tiger Moth plane, he passed out. The plane crashed near his home, but he was okay!

David Tomlinson is best known for his work with Disney. He played George Banks in the beloved film Mary Poppins (1964). This role led to more Disney movies for him.

He also starred in The Love Bug (1968) as Peter Thorndyke. Later, he was in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). Most of his movies were comedies, which means they were funny.

His last movie was The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu in 1980. He retired from acting at age 63. He wanted to spend more time with his family. In 1992, he appeared on a TV talk show called Wogan.

Personal Life

David Tomlinson was married twice. His second wife was actress Audrey Freeman. They got married on May 17, 1953. They stayed together for 47 years until he passed away. They had four sons: David Jr., William, Henry, and James.

David Tomlinson died peacefully on June 24, 2000, at age 83. He was buried on his estate in Mursley, England. He once joked that he wanted his tombstone to say: "actor of genius, irresistible to women."
