David Vanterpool, born on March 31, 1973, is an American basketball coach and a former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards in the National Basketball Association (NBA). As a player, he was recognized as one of the best in Europe, making the All-EuroLeague Second Team in 2004 while playing for Montepaschi Siena.

College Basketball Days
Vanterpool played high school basketball at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He then played college basketball for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. He was with the team from 1991 to 1995. In his final year, he was the team's top scorer. That year, the Bonnies played in the NIT for the first time in over ten years.
Professional Playing Career
In 1995, David Vanterpool was chosen in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) draft. He was picked by the Quad City Thunder. For a short time in 1995, he played in Italy for Brescialat Gorizia.
From 1996 to 1999, Vanterpool played in China. He played for the Jilin Northeast Tigers in two different leagues. He then joined the Yakima Sun Kings in the CBA from 1999 to 2001. With them, he won the CBA championship in 2000.
Vanterpool also played 22 games in the NBA for the Washington Wizards during the 2000–01 season. He also played for the ABA's Kansas City Knights in the 2001–02 season. He briefly signed with the Detroit Pistons (2000) and the New Jersey Nets (2001). However, he did not play in any NBA games for those teams.
After his time in the US, Vanterpool played in Italy. He played for Air Avellino (2002–2003) and Montepaschi Siena (2003–2005). With Montepaschi Siena, he won the Italian League championship and the Italian SuperCup in 2004.
He then moved to Russia to play for CSKA Moscow. There, he helped his team win a EuroLeague championship in 2006.
Coaching Career Highlights

After his playing career ended with CSKA Moscow, Vanterpool became an assistant coach for the same team in 2008. He worked there for one season. In 2010, he became the director of player personnel for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
On August 17, 2012, Vanterpool was named an assistant coach for the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. He played a big role in helping star players like Damian Lillard and C. J. McCollum improve their skills. Lillard even said that Vanterpool helped him become a better leader.
Vanterpool was considered for several head coaching jobs. He interviewed with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013. In June 2015, he joined the coaching staff for the senior men's Canadian national team. He also interviewed for the head coach position with the Denver Nuggets that same month. He was also considered by the Orlando Magic in 2016 and 2018. In 2019, he interviewed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
On June 19, 2019, Vanterpool was hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves as an associate head coach. In October 2020, he interviewed for the head coaching job with the Houston Rockets. Both McCollum and Lillard, his former players, publicly supported him for a head coaching role.
On July 9, 2021, Vanterpool became an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets. In January 2022, he received a fine for interfering with a pass during a game against the Washington Wizards.
In 2023, Vanterpool returned to the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach, where he works today.
