David Lawrence Vanterpool (born March 31, 1973) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During his time as a player, he was chosen for the All-EuroLeague Second Team in the 2003–04 season. This was while he played for Montepaschi Siena in Italy.

David Vanterpool's College Basketball Journey
Vanterpool played high school basketball at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. After high school, he played college basketball for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. He was part of the team from 1991 to 1995. In his final year, he was the team's top scorer. That year, the Bonnies played in the NIT for the first time in over ten years.
David Vanterpool's Professional Playing Career
Early Years in Different Leagues
In 1995, David Vanterpool was picked in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) draft by the Quad City Thunder. For a short time in 1995, he played in Italy for a team called Brescialat Gorizia. This team was in the Italian second division, known as LegADue.
From 1996 to 1999, Vanterpool played in China. He played for the Jilin Northeast Tigers in two different leagues: the Chinese New Basketball Alliance (CNBA) and later the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He then joined the Yakima Sun Kings in the CBA from 1999 to 2001. With them, he won the CBA championship in 2000.
Time in the NBA and ABA
Vanterpool also played 22 games in the NBA during the 2000–01 season. He played for the Washington Wizards. In the 2001–02 season, he played for the ABA team, the Kansas City Knights. He was also briefly signed by the NBA's Detroit Pistons in 2000 and the New Jersey Nets in 2001. However, he did not play in any NBA games for those teams.
Playing in Europe
After his time in the US, Vanterpool played in Italy. He played for Air Avellino from 2002 to 2003. Then he joined Montepaschi Siena from 2003 to 2005. With Siena, he won the Italian League championship in 2004 and the Italian SuperCup in 2004.
He then moved to CSKA Moscow in Russia. There, he helped his team win a EuroLeague championship in 2006.
David Vanterpool's Coaching Career

After ending his playing career with CSKA Moscow, David Vanterpool became an assistant basketball coach for the same team in 2008. He worked there for one season. In 2010, he was hired by the Oklahoma City Thunder as their director of player personnel. This role involves managing players.
Assistant Coach for the Portland Trail Blazers
On August 17, 2012, Vanterpool was named an assistant coach for the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. He played a big part in helping the Trail Blazers' star players, Damian Lillard and C. J. McCollum, improve their skills. Damian Lillard even said that Vanterpool specifically helped him become a better leader.
Other Coaching Opportunities
Vanterpool has been considered for several head coaching jobs. In July 2013, he interviewed for the head coach position with the Philadelphia 76ers. In June 2015, he also interviewed for the head coach job with the Denver Nuggets.
In May 2016, and again in April 2018, he interviewed for the head coach position with the Orlando Magic. In May 2019, he interviewed for the head coach job with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Associate Head Coach and Recent Roles
On June 19, 2019, Vanterpool was hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves as an associate head coach. This role is a step up from an assistant coach. In October 2020, he interviewed for the head coach position with the Houston Rockets. At that time, two of his former players from the Trail Blazers, C. J. McCollum and All-Star Damian Lillard, both said he would be a great head coach in the future.
On February 21, 2021, the Timberwolves hired Toronto Raptors assistant coach Chris Finch as their new head coach. Vanterpool was not interviewed for that position.
On July 9, 2021, Vanterpool was hired as an assistant coach by the Brooklyn Nets. On January 20, 2022, the NBA fined Vanterpool $10,000 and the Nets $25,000. This was because he interfered with a pass during a game against the Washington Wizards on January 19.
Since 2023, David Vanterpool has been an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.
