David Morritz de Kretser was born on April 27, 1939. He is a famous Australian medical researcher. He also served as the 27th Governor of Victoria from 2006 to 2011.

Early Life and Education
David de Kretser was born in British Ceylon, which is now known as Sri Lanka. When he was nine years old, he moved to Australia with his family. He went to school at Camberwell Grammar School in Melbourne.
He studied at the University of Melbourne, where he earned his degrees in Medicine and Surgery in 1962. Later, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Monash University in 1969.
Medical Career and Research
David de Kretser is an expert in infertility and andrology. Infertility means problems that make it hard for people to have babies. Andrology is the study of male health, especially male reproductive health.
He started working at Monash University in 1965. He worked in the anatomy department, which studies the structure of living things. He also helped start and lead the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development. This institute now focuses on medical research.
From 1969 to 1971, he was a senior expert in endocrinology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Endocrinology is the study of hormones and glands in the body.
De Kretser also started a medical research group called Andrology Australia. This group helps people learn about male reproductive health. He has been recognized for his important work by being elected a Fellow of several Australian academies. These include the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
Governor of Victoria
The Governor of Victoria is a special representative of the King or Queen in the state of Victoria, Australia. This role is mostly ceremonial, meaning they perform important duties like opening Parliament and giving awards, but they don't make political decisions.
On April 7, 2006, David de Kretser became the 27th Governor of Victoria. He was chosen by the Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks, and appointed by Queen Elizabeth II. He took over from John Landy. He finished his term on April 8, 2011, and Alex Chernov became the next Governor.
Awards and Honours
In 2001, David de Kretser was named Victoria's Father of the Year. This award recognized his contributions to the community and his family.
On June 12, 2006, he received Australia's highest civilian honour, the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC). This award is given to people who have made outstanding achievements and contributions to Australia. He is also a knight of the British Venerable Order of Saint John.
Personal Life
David de Kretser has been married to Jan Warren for over 40 years. They have four sons named Steve, Mark, Ross, and Hugh. His sons have different careers: Ross and Steve are Chemical Engineers, Mark is a General Practitioner (a doctor), and Hugh is a Human Rights lawyer.
