David Morritz de Kretser, born on April 27, 1939, is a well-known Australian medical scientist. He is famous for his research into how our bodies work. He also served as the 27th Governor of Victoria from 2006 to 2011. The Governor is the Queen's representative in the Australian state of Victoria.

David de Kretser: A Life of Service
Early Life and Medical Discoveries
David de Kretser was born in British Ceylon, which is now known as Sri Lanka. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Australia. He went to school at Camberwell Grammar School in Melbourne.
He then studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, finishing in 1962. Later, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Monash University in 1969.
Dr. de Kretser is an expert in infertility and andrology. Andrology is the study of male reproductive health. He started working at Monash University in 1965. He helped lead the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development, which is now called the Monash Institute of Medical Research. He also worked as an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Medicine. From 1969 to 1971, he was a senior expert in endocrinology (the study of hormones) at the University of Washington in the United States.
Dr. de Kretser also started a medical research group called Andrology Australia. His important work led to him becoming a Fellow of several top Australian science academies. These include the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
Serving Victoria as Governor
On April 7, 2006, David de Kretser became the Governor of Victoria. He was chosen for this important role by Queen Elizabeth II, following a suggestion from the Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks. He took over from John Landy.
As Governor, he represented the Queen in Victoria. He carried out many official duties for the state. He served for five years, leaving the position on April 8, 2011. Alex Chernov then became the new Governor.
Special Awards and Family Life
In 2001, David de Kretser was named Victoria's Father of the Year. This award recognized his dedication and contributions.
On June 12, 2006, he received Australia's highest civilian honour. This was the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC). This award is given to people who have made outstanding contributions to Australia. He is also a knight of the British Venerable Order of Saint John.
David de Kretser has been married to his wife, Jan, for over 40 years. They have four sons: Steve, Mark, Ross, and Hugh. Each of his sons has also gone on to have interesting careers, including chemical engineering, medicine, and human rights law.
