Davis Creek is a small community in Modoc County, California. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government. You can find it about 19 miles (31 km) north of Alturas. The community sits high up, at 4,846 feet (1,477 meters) above sea level.

Today, Davis Creek has a post office, a gas station, and a small store all in one building. Its ZIP Code is 96108, and its phone area code is 530.

History of Davis Creek

The first people to settle in the Goose Lake Valley area of Davis Creek built a log cabin in 1869. This was the very beginning of the community.

Early Services and Transportation

A post office opened in Davis Creek in 1877. It was first called something else, but its name officially changed to Davis Creek in 1879.

Between 1908 and 1912, Goose Lake had very high water levels. During this time, Davis Creek became an important port on the southern end of the lake. A ferry boat called Lakeview carried people and goods across the lake. It traveled between Davis Creek and the town of Lakeview, Oregon, at the northern end.

In 1911, the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway reached Davis Creek from Reno. This railroad helped connect the community to other places. However, as the lake's water levels dropped and the railroad was finished all the way to Lakeview, the ferry port was no longer needed.

Changes Over Time

By 1913, a book described Davis Creek as being on Goose Lake. It also mentioned that about 150 people lived there at the time.

In the early 1960s, a major change happened. U.S. Route 395, a main highway, was moved. It was rerouted to bypass the main business area of Davis Creek. This change caused most of the businesses in the old part of town to close. A new general store was then built along the new highway.
