Deansgate Square, once called Owen Street, is a group of four very tall buildings, known as skyscrapers. They are located on the edge of Manchester City Centre in England. The tallest building in the group is 201 metres (659 feet) high.

These towers are near Deansgate railway station and the Mancunian Way road. For many years, this area was empty. So, in the early 2000s, Manchester City Council created a plan called the Great Jackson Street Development Framework. This plan allowed for tall buildings to be built here.

In 2016, the idea for these buildings was brought back. A new plan was made for four skyscrapers. The South Tower, at 201 metres (659 feet), became the tallest building in Manchester in November 2018. It is taller than the 169-metre Beetham Tower.

Building work officially started in July 2016. The company Renaker began building the South and West Towers first. Then, in October 2017, work started on the North and East Towers. All the buildings were finished by late 2020. More tall buildings are still being built nearby as part of the Great Jackson Street Development Framework.

Original Plans: What Was Proposed in 2007?

Back in 2007, there was an earlier plan for this area. It included five tall buildings. These buildings would have had almost 1,100 homes, 100 hotel-like apartments, a hotel, shops, and other community spaces.

The tallest building in that plan was called “Block D.” It was going to be 49 floors high, which was taller than Manchester's Beetham Tower at the time. It would have been about 150 metres (492 feet) tall.

Manchester City Council approved this plan in 2008. Later, in 2011, they gave permission to extend the time limit for starting the building work.

New Vision: The 2016 Plan for Four Towers

In January 2016, a new plan was shared with the public. This revised idea came from developers Renaker Build and was designed by SimpsonHaugh and Partners. They asked for permission to build four skyscrapers.

The proposed towers would range from 122 to over 200 metres high:

  • The South Tower: 64 floors and 200.5 metres tall.
  • The East Tower: 50 floors and 157.9 metres tall.
  • The North Tower: 37 floors and 122 metres tall.
  • The West Tower: 44 floors and 140.4 metres tall.

Manchester City Council gave its approval for this new plan on June 30, 2016.

How the Towers Were Built: Construction Milestones

Building on the Deansgate Square complex officially began in July 2016. Renaker started with the South and West Towers. The deep foundations for the West Tower were finished by November 2016. Soon after, large tower cranes were put up. Both towers continued to grow taller for about two years.

By October 2017, while the South and West Towers were still rising, work began on the foundations for the North and East Towers. By July 2018, the West Tower reached its full height of 45 floors. In November 2018, the South Tower, the tallest at 201 metres, also reached its full height of 65 floors.

In August 2018, a big investment company called Legal & General bought the 140-metre West Tower. They planned to rent out the apartments once the building was finished. In January 2020, Legal & General also bought the North Tower for the same purpose.

By October 2020, all four towers – North, South, East, and West – were fully completed.
