Dearing is a small town in McDuffie County, Georgia, United States. It is located in the eastern part of the state. In 2020, the town had a population of 529 people. Dearing is considered part of the larger Augusta metropolitan area.
History of Dearing
The area where Dearing is now was first known by a different name: "Lombardy." A post office was opened there in 1823, using the name Lombardy.
Later, in 1893, the name of the post office was changed to Dearing. The town was officially recognized and given its own government in 1910 by the Georgia General Assembly. It was named after William Dearing, who was an important official for the railroad.
Geography and Location
Dearing is found in the southeastern part of McDuffie County. It is located at coordinates 33°24′48″N 82°23′5″W.
Two main roads, U.S. Routes 78 and 278, pass through the town together. These roads connect Dearing to other nearby places. If you travel northwest about 8 miles (13 km), you will reach Thomson, which is the main town of McDuffie County. Traveling east about 4 miles (6 km) will take you to Harlem. The larger city of Augusta is about 24 miles (39 km) east of Dearing.
The town of Dearing covers a total area of about 0.8 square miles (2.1 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. A very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water. The water in the town flows into small streams that eventually lead to the Savannah River.
Population Changes
The population of Dearing has changed over the years. In 2000, there were 441 people living in the town. This included 178 households and 126 families. By the year 2020, the population had grown to 529 people.
