History of Declezville

Who Was William Declez?

Declezville is named after a man named William Declez. He was born in France but became a U.S. citizen. William Declez was famous for his business that worked with marble and granite.

Granite Quarries and the Railroad

In the 1860s, William Declez started opening granite quarries. These were places where large amounts of granite stone were dug out of the ground. His quarries were in the Jurupa Hills in Southern California.

The Southern Pacific Railroad played a big part in naming Declezville. The railroad built a special track, called a "spur," to reach Declez's large granite quarries. The railroad named the meeting point "Declez." The end of the track, where the granite was loaded, was called "Declezville." This was all named after William Declez, who owned the granite business.

Today, Declezville is still a community. It is located in the southern part of Fontana.
