What is Deep Bay?
Deep Bay is a lovely spot on Vancouver Island. It is not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it is an "unincorporated area." This means it is part of a larger regional district.
The community is famous for its marina. This marina is built in a naturally protected part of the bay. It offers a safe place for boats to dock.
Nature and Geography
Deep Bay has an interesting natural history. On June 23, 1946, a big earthquake shook the Strait of Georgia area. This event was called the 1946 Vancouver Island earthquake.
The earthquake caused the bottom of Deep Bay to sink. In some places, the seabed dropped by about 2.7 meters (9 feet). In other spots, it sank as much as 25.6 meters (84 feet).
Learning at Deep Bay
Deep Bay is home to an important research center. It is called the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. This station is a part of the Vancouver Island University.
Scientists and students at the station study the ocean. They learn about marine life and the environment. It's a great place for marine research.
A Look Back in Time
The Island Rail Corridor runs through Deep Bay. This is a railway line that used to have train service. While trains no longer run here, the tracks are still a part of the area's history.
The Deep Bay Logging Company
In the 1920s, a man named Eikichi Kagetsu bought a large area of timberland in Deep Bay. He started a company called Deep Bay Logging Co. This company harvested trees in Deep Bay and Fanny Bay.
During World War II, the Canadian government took control of his company. They sold it to another company, the H.R. MacMillan Export Company. This happened without Mr. Kagetsu's permission.
