Geography of Onota Township
Onota Township covers a total area of about 268 square kilometers (103 square miles). Most of this area, about 227 square kilometers (88 square miles), is land. The rest, about 41 square kilometers (16 square miles), is water. This means a good portion of the township is covered by lakes or rivers.
Communities in Onota Township
There are no big cities or towns with their own governments inside Onota Township. However, there are a few smaller communities, which are like neighborhoods or small settlements.
Deerton Community
Deerton is a small community that started as a train station in 1882. It's located at 46°28′28″N 87°02′31″W / 46.47444°N 87.04194°W. A post office has been open in Deerton since 1922, helping people send and receive mail.
Rock River Community
Rock River is another community located near the mouth of the Rock River on M-28. Its location is 46°27′50″N 86°54′48″W / 46.46389°N 86.91333°W. This community is different from Rock River Township, which is a separate area just south of Onota Township. This settlement also began as a train station in 1882. It had a post office from 1886 to 1906, though it closed for a short time.
Sand River Community
Sand River is a community found on M-28, close to where the Sand River meets the lake. You can find it at 46°29′26″N 87°06′57″W / 46.49056°N 87.11583°W. This community is partly in Onota Township and partly in Chocolay Township in Marquette County. Like other communities here, it started as a train station in 1882. It had a post office that moved between counties and closed in 1911.
Tyoga Community
Tyoga was once a community with a post office and a train station. It was located at 46°29′40″N 87°02′35″W / 46.49444°N 87.04306°W. The community grew around a lumber company and a general store. It had a post office for a short time from 1906 to 1907. Today, Tyoga has a special pathway that tells the story of its past.
