The 2015 Tornado and Recovery
What Happened in May 2015?
On May 10, 2015, a strong EF2 tornado hit Delmont. It moved through the western part of the city. Many homes and buildings were badly damaged or destroyed. Even Zion Lutheran Church, which was over 100 years old, was ruined.
Helping the Community Recover
The state's governor, Dennis Daugaard, declared an emergency. He asked the National Guard to help clean up. Even though the damage was huge, only nine people were hurt, and no one died.
After the tornado, some people wondered if Delmont would recover. In June 2015, the mayor thought that half of the residents might not come back. However, the population decline was not as big as expected. By 2020, the population was 153, down from 234 in 2010.
Rebuilding Zion Lutheran Church
A new Zion Lutheran Church was built near where the old one stood. It was finished and opened in August 2017. Some parts of the original church, like the altar, were saved and used in the new building. This showed the community's strength and hope.
