The Dempster–Skokie station is a train stop on the CTA's Yellow Line. It was once known simply as Dempster or Skokie. You can find it at 5005 Dempster Street in Skokie, Illinois.
This station is one of only three stops on the Yellow Line. It is currently the end of the line. The station is at ground level, not elevated or underground. It is also one of two CTA train stations located in Skokie.
Dempster–Skokie is a unique station. It is one of two end-of-line stations that does not have a special train yard connected to it. The Yellow Line trains are stored at the Howard Yard. The Skokie Shops are nearby for train repairs, but they are not used for storing trains.

History of the Station
The Dempster–Skokie station was first built in 1925. It was part of a new, faster train route for the North Shore Line. This route was called the Skokie Valley Route.
Trains from the Chicago Rapid Transit Company also used this station. Their service, called the Niles Center Route, ended in 1948. The North Shore Line stopped running trains in 1963.
However, the CTA started a new service in 1964. This new service used a temporary station in the same spot. It became known as the Skokie Swift. Today, we call it the Yellow Line.
The Original Station Building
The station building you see today was built in 1994. But there was an older, original station building. This older building is called the Dempster Street Station. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
The original station building was moved about 130 feet east of its first spot. This move cost about $1 million. It made space for the new station and its parking lot. The old station building is now home to a Starbucks coffee shop and a law office. The Starbucks even has a drive-thru lane! The address for the old station is 5001 Dempster Street.
Station Services
The Dempster–Skokie station is a hub for different types of transportation. It has stops for both CTA and Pace buses.
It was once a terminal for Greyhound buses. This meant Greyhound buses started or ended their trips here. However, Greyhound stopped offering service to Skokie in 2012.
In 2011, the Chicago Transit Board decided to rename the station. It changed from "Skokie" to "Dempster–Skokie." This happened when they announced the name for the new Oakton–Skokie station.
