Denholm Elliott was a talented English actor. He starred in many movies, TV shows, and plays. He was known for playing a wide range of characters. He appeared in over 120 films and television programs during his career. In 1981, he won a special award called the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Early life
Denholm Elliott was born in London, England, on May 31, 1922. His parents were Nina and Myles Elliott. He went to a school called Malvern College. After that, he studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. This is a famous school for actors.
A successful acting career
Denholm Elliott became very well-known in the 1980s. He won three important awards in a row from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). These awards were for Best Supporting Actor. He won for his roles in Trading Places, A Private Function, and Defence of the Realm.
He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his role in A Room with a View. Many people also remember him as the kind but sometimes confused Dr. Marcus Brody. This was a character in the popular Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade movies. His character was even mentioned in a later Indiana Jones film. In 1988, he played a spy character named Povin in a TV show called Codename: Kyril.
His later years
Denholm Elliott passed away on October 6, 1992. He died at his home in Ibiza, Spain, after a serious illness. His wife, Susan Robinson, later started a charity in his memory. It was called the Denholm Elliott Project. She also helped write a book about his life.
