Dennis Clay Powell, born on August 13, 1963, is a former American professional baseball pitcher. He played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) and also in Japan.
Starting His Baseball Journey
After finishing high school, Dennis Powell wasn't immediately picked by any professional baseball teams. He found a job working on an ice truck to help support his family. While working, he also played semi-pro baseball in Albany, Georgia.
It wasn't until his second season playing semi-pro that baseball scouts noticed his talent. The Los Angeles Dodgers offered him a signing bonus to join their team. This was a big step for him, moving from delivering ice to playing professional baseball.
Playing in the Major Leagues
Dennis Powell played in Major League Baseball for parts of eight seasons. He pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1985 to 1986. Later, he joined the Seattle Mariners, playing with them from 1987 to 1990, and again from 1992 to 1993. He also had a short time with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1990.
After his time in MLB, Powell went on to play baseball in Japan. In 1995, he played one season for the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball.
Dennis Powell as a Hitter
Even though Dennis Powell was mainly a pitcher, he sometimes got to bat. During his time in the major leagues, he had three hits. Interestingly, all three of his hits were doubles. A double means the batter hits the ball and safely reaches second base.
This fact ties him with a few other players for having a career where all their hits were doubles. This is quite rare in baseball!
