High School Basketball Journey
Denzel went to Paul J. Hagerty High School in Oviedo, Florida. As a junior, he was named Florida 8A State Player of the Year. This is a big award for high school basketball players.
However, he faced a challenge. He tore a ligament in his knee during a game. This injury meant he missed his entire senior year of high school. He spent that time recovering and getting stronger. After high school, Denzel decided to play college basketball for Southeast Missouri State.
College Basketball Career
Starting at Southeast Missouri State
As a freshman at Southeast Missouri State, Denzel played really well. He scored about 14.9 points per game. Because of his great performance, he was named the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Freshman of the Year. He also earned a spot on the All-OVC second team.
In his second year, Denzel improved even more. He increased his scoring average to 19.3 points per game. This earned him a spot on the first-team All-OVC. After his sophomore season, Denzel decided to transfer to a different college. He chose to play for the Creighton Bluejays.
Playing for Creighton
When Denzel transferred, he had to sit out the 2018–19 season. This was a rule from the NCAA, which manages college sports. He became eligible to play again on December 17 of the next season.
Denzel became a key player for Creighton. He led all non-starters in the Big East Conference in scoring. He averaged 12 points per game. For his excellent play off the bench, he received the Big East Sixth Man Award. After this season, Denzel thought about joining the 2020 NBA draft. However, he decided to return to Creighton for his final year.
In his senior year, he continued to play strongly. He averaged 12.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. After this season, Denzel declared for the 2021 NBA draft. He decided to go pro instead of using an extra year of college eligibility. This extra year was given to players by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professional Basketball
Playing for the Austin Spurs (2021–2023)
Denzel was not chosen in the 2021 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play professionally. He joined the Charlotte Hornets for the 2021 NBA Summer League. This is a special league where new players and young pros get to show their skills.
On October 6, 2021, Denzel signed with the San Antonio Spurs. But he was released from their training camp before the regular season began. A few weeks later, on October 27, he signed with the Austin Spurs. The Austin Spurs are a team in the NBA G League, which is like a development league for the NBA. He played for them from 2021 to 2023.
On October 28, 2023, the Iowa Wolves picked Denzel in the 2023 NBA G League draft. However, they decided to release him from their team on November 8.
