Denzel Robert "Bobby" Valentine (born November 16, 1993) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for Pallacanestro Trieste in Italy's top basketball league, the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA).

Valentine played college basketball for the Michigan State Spartans. During his senior year, he became the first player from Michigan State to be named the National Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He also won many other awards and was chosen as a unanimous First-Team All-American. The Chicago Bulls picked Valentine as the 14th overall player in the 2016 NBA draft.

High School Basketball Days

Denzel Valentine went to J. W. Sexton High School. His father, Carlton Valentine, who also played for Michigan State, was his coach. Denzel played alongside Bryn Forbes, who later became his teammate at Michigan State.

In his sophomore year, Valentine helped Sexton reach the state championship game. He averaged about 11 points, 6 assists, and 6 rebounds per game. As a senior, he had impressive averages of 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. He led Sexton to a great 27–1 record. Valentine was named the Lansing State Journal Player of the Year and the Associated Press Class B Player of the Year.

College Career Highlights

After a good first year, Valentine received the Unsung Player Award from his Michigan State teammates. In his second year, he was recognized as an honorable-mention All-Big Ten player.

As a junior, Valentine took on a bigger leadership role for the team. A memorable moment happened on Valentine's Day in 2015. He made the game-winning shot against Ohio State, scoring 17 points in that game. He earned several honors that year, including being named to the Orlando Classic All-Tournament Team.

On November 17, 2015, during his senior year, Valentine achieved a triple-double. This means he had double-digit numbers in three different stats: 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. This happened in Michigan State's win over the fourth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. He was only the fourth player in Michigan State history to get a triple-double.

Valentine was a finalist for many top college basketball awards. These included the Naismith Trophy and the John R. Wooden Award. He finished his 2015–16 regular season averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists. He was named the Big Ten's Player of the Year.

Valentine's senior year was very successful. He won Michigan State's first College Basketball Player of the Year Award since Draymond Green in 2012. He also shined in the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player as Michigan State won its fifth championship. His strong performance in college greatly improved his chances for the NBA draft.
