Deron Mayo, born on March 28, 1988, is an American football coach. He used to play as a linebacker. Today, he is the head strength and conditioning coach for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL).

Even though his brother, Jerod Mayo, was no longer the Patriots' head coach after the 2024 season, the new head coach, Mike Vrabel, announced on February 5, 2025, that Deron Mayo would continue in his role for the 2025 season. Deron played college football for the Old Dominion Monarchs. He joined the Denver Broncos in 2011 as a player who was not drafted. Mayo also played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Deron Mayo grew up in Hampton, Virginia. He went to Kecoughtan High School where he played football. During his senior year, he was chosen for the All-Peninsula District first-team. He also made the all-area second-team for his great playing.

Playing for Hofstra and Old Dominion

Deron Mayo started his college football career at Hofstra University. He played there for three seasons. After that, he moved to Old Dominion for his final year of college football.

Professional Football Career

Playing in the NFL: Denver Broncos

On July 26, 2011, Deron Mayo signed with the Denver Broncos. He joined them as an undrafted free agent. This means he was not chosen in the NFL draft but was still signed by a team.

Playing in the CFL: Calgary Stampeders

Making an Impact in Canada

On May 8, 2012, Mayo signed with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League. In his first season in 2012, Mayo was a key player on special teams. He made 15 special teams tackles. He also had 9 defensive tackles and 1 quarterback sack.

Becoming a Defensive Star

In his second season in 2013, Mayo became a very important part of the Stampeders' defense. He finished that season with 57 tackles. Winning the Grey Cup Championship

At the end of the 2014 season, the Stampeders won the 102nd Grey Cup. They beat the Hamilton team 20-16. In the championship game, Mayo led his team with 7 tackles and forced a fumble. On March 9, 2015, Mayo and the Stampeders agreed to extend his contract. He officially retired from playing football on April 10, 2018.

In 2018, Deron Mayo joined the New England Patriots. He was hired as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. In this role, he helped players get stronger and stay in top physical shape.

Becoming Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

In 2024, Mayo was promoted to head strength and conditioning coach. This means he now leads the entire program for the team. On February 5, 2025, the new Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel, announced that Mayo would continue in this important role for the 2025 season.

Deron Mayo's Family Life

Deron Mayo has two brothers, Jerod and Derek. Both of his brothers also played football as linebackers. Jerod played college football at Tennessee. He was a first-round pick for the New England Patriots in the NFL. Jerod played for the Patriots from 2008 to 2015 and won a Super Bowl with them. Jerod was also the head coach for the Patriots during the 2024 season. Derek played college football at the University of Richmond. He was part of the 2008 Richmond Spiders team that won the NCAA FCS National Championship.
