Derrick D'wayne Burroughs was born on May 18, 1962. He is a former American football player and a coach. He played as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Buffalo Bills. After his playing career, he became a football coach. He was the head coach for the Lane College football team two different times. Today, he works as the athletic director at Lane College.

Derrick Burroughs: From Player to Coach
Derrick Burroughs was a very talented football player. He played college football at the University of Memphis. He was so good that he was named First-team All-South Independent in 1984.
Playing in the NFL
In 1985, the Buffalo Bills picked Derrick in the first round of the NFL Draft. He was the 14th player chosen overall! He played for the Bills for five seasons, from 1985 to 1989. During his first year, he was even named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. This means he was one of the best new players in the league that year. As a player, he had 6 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, and 1 sack.
Starting His Coaching Journey
After his time as a player, Burroughs began his coaching career in 1995. His first job was as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for Knoxville College. A few years later, he coached in NFL Europe for the Amsterdam Admirals. He worked with running backs there.
In 1999, he became the defensive backs coach for the Berlin Thunder. He continued coaching defensive backs for other teams. These included the Los Angeles Avengers in the Arena Football League in 2000. He also coached for the Memphis Maniax in the XFL in 2001.
Coaching College Teams
After a short break from coaching, Burroughs returned in 2006. He became the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Clark Atlanta. In 2007, he coached defensive backs at Stillman College. He then spent 2008 in the same role at Alabama State University.
Leading the Lane Dragons
On February 6, 2010, Derrick Burroughs became the head football coach at Lane College. He coached there for four seasons, from 2010 to 2013. His best season during this time was in 2013, when his team had 7 wins and only 3 losses.
After a year coaching at Jackson State University, he returned to Lane College in 2015. He coached the Lane Dragons again until 2019. During his time as head coach at Lane, his teams had an overall record of 33 wins and 56 losses.
Life Beyond the Field
Since 2015, Derrick Burroughs has also served as the Athletic director for Lane College. This means he helps manage all the sports programs at the college. He helps make sure the teams have what they need to succeed.
