Derrick Dwayne Kindred Jr. is a former American football player. He was a safety, a position on the defense team. Derrick played college football at Texas Christian University. The Cleveland Browns picked him in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Early Life and High School Football
Derrick Dwayne Kindred Jr. was born on December 15, 1993, in San Antonio, Texas. His parents were Derrick Kindred Sr. and Karen Randle. His dad was a truck driver, and his mom was a physical therapist. Later, his mom became a pharmacy technician.
Derrick's parents divorced, and his mother raised him. He went to Karen Wagner High School in San Antonio. In high school, Derrick was a great player on both offense and defense.
High School Achievements
As a running back on offense, Derrick ran for 1,604 yards in his senior year. He also scored 14 touchdowns. On defense, he made 71 tackles and had two sacks. He even returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.
In 2011, the San Antonio Express-News newspaper named him the best two-way player. This was for all Class 5A schools in Texas.
Choosing a College
When Derrick was ready for college, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds. Only the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) first wanted him to play football. UTSA was just starting its football program.
Derrick first decided to play for UTSA. But before the official National Signing Day, Baylor University and Texas Christian University (TCU) also showed interest. Derrick changed his mind and chose TCU right before the deadline.
College Football Career at TCU
At TCU, Derrick Kindred started playing in 2012. He started one game as a freshman. In 2013, his sophomore year, he started three games.
He became a full-time starter in his junior and senior years. He started all 26 games during those two seasons.
Key College Stats
In his junior year, Derrick had four interceptions and 80 tackles. In his senior year, he made two interceptions and 87 tackles. He was the second-best tackler on his team that year.
He finished his college career playing 50 games. He had 235 tackles, eight interceptions, and two touchdowns. He was named a First-team All-Conference player. The Big 12 Conference coaches also gave him an Honorable Mention All-Big 12 award.
Playing Through Injury
Derrick played his entire senior season with a broken left collarbone. He tripped over another player during practice. This happened three days before the first game against the University of Minnesota. Doctors checked his injury and said he could still play. He just needed extra padding.
His Nickname
Members of the TCU football team called Derrick "Peanut." Quarterback Trevone Boykin gave him this nickname. It was because of the shape of Derrick's head.

Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns picked Derrick Kindred in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He was the 11th safety chosen in that draft. On May 26, 2016, he signed a four-year contract with the Browns.
2016 Season
During training camp, Derrick played very well. He impressed the coaches. He competed for the starting free safety spot. The head coach named him the backup strong safety.
He played his first professional game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He made six tackles in that game. On September 25, 2016, Derrick started his first game. He made four tackles.
In Week 11, he made six tackles and blocked two passes. This was his season high for pass blocks. In December 2016, he broke his ankle while training. He was put on a special injury list. He played in 12 games and started five of them. He finished his first season with 46 tackles and five passes blocked.
2017 Season
In 2017, Derrick competed to be the starting strong safety. He earned the job and started the season in that role.
He played in the Browns' first game against the Steelers. He made three tackles. He also got his first career interception by catching a pass from Ben Roethlisberger. This interception stopped the Steelers from scoring.

The New York Jets then picked up Derrick on August 20, 2019. He was released by the Jets on August 31, 2019.
San Francisco 49ers
On January 4, 2020, Derrick signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers. He was released by the 49ers on July 28, 2020.
