Derrick Dwayne Kindred Jr. (born December 15, 1993) is an American former professional football player. He was a safety, a defensive position in football. Derrick played college football at Texas Christian University. After college, he was chosen by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL draft.

Derrick Kindred's Early Life and High School Football

Derrick Dwayne Kindred Jr. was born on December 15, 1993, in San Antonio, Texas. His parents were Derrick Kindred Sr. and Karen Randle. His dad was a truck driver, and his mom worked as a physical therapist. Derrick was raised by his mother after his parents divorced.

He went to Karen Wagner High School in San Antonio. In high school, Derrick was a star player on both offense and defense. As a running back (an offensive player), he ran for over 1,600 yards and scored 14 touchdowns in his senior year. On defense, he made 71 tackles and had two sacks. He even returned two kickoffs for touchdowns!

Because of his amazing skills, he was named the best two-way player in his high school class by the San Antonio Express-News in 2011.

When it was time for college, Derrick was about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds. At first, only the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) wanted him to play for their new football team. Derrick planned to go to UTSA. But then, just before the deadline to commit, Baylor University and Texas Christian University (TCU) also showed interest. Derrick decided to change his mind and play for TCU instead.

Derrick Kindred's College Football Journey

Derrick Kindred played college football at Texas Christian University. In his first year (2012), he started one game. In his second year (2013), he started three games. By his junior and senior years, he was a full-time starter, playing in all 26 games.

Playing for TCU

In his junior year, Derrick had four interceptions and made 80 tackles. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player. In his senior year, he had two interceptions and 87 tackles. He was the second-best tackler on his team that year.

Derrick finished his college career having played 50 games. He made 235 tackles, had eight interceptions, and scored two touchdowns. He was recognized as a First-team All-Conference player.

Interestingly, Derrick played his entire senior season with a broken left collarbone. He got the injury during practice just before the first game. Doctors said he could still play if he wore extra padding.

His teammates at TCU had a nickname for him: "Peanut." This nickname was given to him by quarterback Trevone Boykin because of the shape of Derrick's head.

Derrick Kindred's Professional Football Career

Derrick Kindred was chosen by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He was the 129th player picked overall. On May 26, 2016, he signed a four-year contract worth about $2.83 million with the Browns.

Cleveland Browns: Early Years

During his first training camp with the Browns, Derrick played very well. He impressed his coaches and competed for a starting spot as a free safety. The head coach, Hue Jackson, named him the backup strong safety.

Derrick played his first professional game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He made six tackles in that game. On September 25, 2016, he got his first start because another player was injured. He made four tackles in that game.

In November 2016, he had a season-high six tackles against the Dallas Cowboys. Later, he broke his ankle while training during a break week. He had to stop playing for the rest of the season. In his first year, he played in 12 games and started five of them. He finished with 46 tackles and five passes defended.

In 2017, Derrick competed again for the starting strong safety job and earned it. In the first game of the season, he made his first career interception against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This interception stopped the Steelers from possibly scoring. The next week, he made a season-high seven tackles. In December 2017, he injured his wrist and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season early again.
