Desmond Abbott was born on 10 January 1986 in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. He is a talented Australian field hockey player. He played as a midfielder and striker.

Desmond was a key member of the Australia men's national field hockey team. He first played for the national team on 28 January 2007. He won several gold medals during his career. These included gold at the Hockey Champions Trophy in 2008, 2009, and 2010. He also won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Desmond earned a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He retired from playing in 2013.

Desmond Abbott was born in Darwin, Northern Territory. He is an Australian Aboriginal person. His full first name is Desmond, but people often call him Des. Outside of hockey, he enjoys playing Australian rules football. He also worked for a water company.

Desmond's uncle is Joe Daby, who is known as one of the best field hockey players from the Northern Territory. Desmond is recognized by the Australian Olympic Committee as an Indigenous Olympian.

Desmond's Field Hockey Career

Desmond Abbott played as both a midfielder and a striker. When he played for the national team, his jersey number was 32. For his club team, he played for the Aquinas Reds. He also played for the NT Stingers in the Australian Hockey League, where he wore shirt number 17.

In June 2010, he played a game for the NT Stingers against Western Australia. He scored a goal in that game. In January 2005, Desmond was part of Australia's Under-21 national team. He played in a five-game series against Malaysia in Brisbane. He was one of four players from Darwin, Northern Territory on that team. Later, in June 2005, he was one of five players from the Northern Territory chosen for the Under-21 team at the World Cup. In 2009, he played professional hockey in the Netherlands.

Playing for the National Team

Desmond Abbott played his first game for the senior Australian team on 28 January 2007. This was during the Dutch Series in Canberra. In January 2008, he was part of the senior national team. They competed in the Five Nations men's hockey tournament in South Africa.

Desmond helped his team win the Hockey Champions Trophy three times: in 2008, 2009, and 2010. In the 2009 Champions Trophy final, Australia won the gold medal against Germany with a score of 5–3. He was also part of the Australian team that won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Desmond competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he won a bronze medal. In Australia's first game at the 2008 Olympics, he scored three goals against Canada. He was the first Aboriginal person to represent Australia in men's field hockey at the Olympics. He also scored a goal in the bronze medal game against the Netherlands, which Australia won 6–1.

In April 2009, the new national team coach, Ric Charlesworth, included Desmond in the squad. This was to prepare the team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Desmond did not play in the Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia in May 2011 because he was injured.

In December 2011, Desmond was named as one of 28 players for the 2012 Summer Olympics training squad. This squad was later made smaller in June 2012. He trained with the team from January to March in Perth, Western Australia. He was one of two players from the Northern Territory in that squad. During a training camp in February, he played in a four-nations test series. He missed some of the training camp due to a strained quad muscle.

Awards and Recognition

In 2009, Desmond Abbott was nominated for the Qantas NT Sportsperson of the Year award. He was also nominated for the International Hockey Federation 2008 Young Men's Player of the Year. He finished second in that award.
