The Deshka River is a beautiful river located in south-central Alaska. It is about 44 mi (71 km) long. This river is famous for its amazing fishing opportunities. Many people visit the Deshka River to catch different kinds of fish.

Fishing Fun in the Deshka River

The Deshka River is one of the best places in Southcentral Alaska for sport fishing. It is especially known for its large runs of Chinook salmon and coho salmon. These are popular fish that anglers love to catch.

Besides salmon, you can also find other cool fish here. These include grayling, burbot, northern pike, and rainbow trout. The river's clear waters and natural environment make it a perfect home for these fish.

Getting to the Deshka River

Getting to the Deshka River can be a bit of an adventure! The river is in a "roadless area." This means there are no roads that lead directly to it. Most people reach the river by using a power boat. They travel up from the nearby Susitna River.

Another way to get there is by floatplane. A floatplane is an airplane that can land on water. This makes it easy to reach remote areas like the Deshka River. The land along the last ten miles of the river is mostly owned by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Caring for the River

Because the Deshka River is so popular, it sees a lot of visitors. Sometimes, too much use can cause problems. For example, the plants along the riverbanks can get damaged. This is called "loss of riparian vegetation." When plants are gone, the riverbanks can start to wear away. This is known as "bank erosion."

To help protect the river, a special project was done in 2002. This project worked to fix the damaged areas. It helped to restore the riverbanks and plant new vegetation. This helps keep the Deshka River healthy for both fish and people.

Where the River Flows

The Deshka River starts where two smaller streams meet. These streams are called Kroto Creek and Moose Creek. This meeting point is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of Neil Lake. From there, the Deshka River flows south. It eventually joins the much larger Susitna River.

River Branches

The Deshka River has a few smaller streams that flow into it. These are called tributaries.
