Susitna is a small community in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. Susitna is part of the larger Anchorage area. In 2020, only 11 people lived there.
Susitna was once the home of Shem Pete (around 1896-1989). He was a respected Athabaskan elder, historian, and expert on cultures. Shem Pete traveled thousands of miles to record many places in the Matanuska-Susitna region. His important work was later published in a book called Shem Pete's Alaska: The Territory of the Upper Cook Inlet Dena'ina.

Where is Susitna Located?
Susitna is found in the southwestern part of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. It is mostly on the west side of the Susitna River. This river flows into Cook Inlet. A small part of Susitna, where the main settlement is, lies on the east side of the river.
The community is about 22 miles (35 km) southwest of Houston. It is also about 35 miles (56 km) west of Wasilla. The total area of Susitna is about 218.8 square miles (566.7 km²). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Susitna has seen its population change a lot over the years. In 1880, it first appeared on the U.S. Census. Back then, it was listed as two Native villages with 90 residents. By 1910, it reached its highest population with 233 people.
Over time, the population decreased. In 1940, only 12 people lived there. The area was not counted again until 1960. In 2000, Susitna became a census-designated place (CDP). Its boundaries were made much larger, now covering both sides of the Susitna River.
