Early Life and Education
Desreta Jackson was born in Tortola, which is part of the British Virgin Islands. When she was nine years old, her family moved to the United States. They first lived in a less wealthy part of Los Angeles. Her mother worked hard, even collecting cans, to support the family.
After two years, her family found a new home in South Central Los Angeles. Desreta discovered her love for acting after performing in a school play. She told her mother she wanted to take drama classes. Her mother enrolled her in acting classes to help her stay focused and avoid negative influences in their neighborhood.
Later in her career, after acting in many TV shows and movies, Jackson went to Los Angeles City College. She earned a degree in directing there.
Acting Career
Desreta Jackson's acting journey started very quickly after she began taking classes. She went to an audition for the movie The Color Purple. The producer, Reuben Cannon, noticed her right away. She was called back for more auditions and eventually got the part of Young Celie Harris. In the movie, the adult Celie was played by Whoopi Goldberg.
After The Color Purple, Jackson continued to act in both television shows and films.
