History of Detroit Township
Detroit Township was officially created in 1871. This means it started its local government and community services that year.
Geography and Nature
Geography is the study of the Earth's physical features. Detroit Township covers a total area of about 73 square kilometers (about 28 square miles). Most of this area, 61.1 square kilometers (23.6 square miles), is land. The rest, 11.9 square kilometers (4.6 square miles), is water, mostly from its many lakes.
The northern part of the city of Detroit Lakes is actually inside Detroit Township. However, Detroit Lakes is a separate city with its own government.
