Deveaux Bank is a special island in South Carolina. It's shaped like a horseshoe and is made of sand. This island is a huge 215-acre (87-hectare) home for many birds!
You can find Deveaux Bank in the Atlantic Ocean. It sits right at the mouth of the North Edisto River. It's located between Edisto Island, South Carolina and Seabrook Island, South Carolina. The island is about three feet above sea level. It has almost 2.75 miles (4.43 kilometres) of sandy beaches. Some of these beaches even go underwater when the tide is high!
History of Deveaux Bank
People first wrote about Deveaux Bank in 1921. By the 1930s, it was already a busy place for seabirds to raise their young.
During World War II, the island was used for military practice. Later, in 1979, a big storm called Hurricane David covered the whole island with water. Strong tides the next spring also changed it a lot. But over the next few years, the island slowly grew back. Ocean currents brought new sand, rebuilding it piece by piece.
Deveaux Bank Today
The shape of Deveaux Bank is always changing. This is because ocean currents constantly move the sand around. The island is a very important place for birds to nest. There are no animals on the island that would hunt the birds or their eggs.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources protects Deveaux Bank. This means there are special rules to keep the birds safe. For example, you can only land on the beach below the high-water line. Dogs are not allowed on the island. Also, you cannot camp there overnight. These rules help protect the many birds that call Deveaux Bank home.
Plants on the Island
