Devin Anthony Vassell is a talented American professional basketball player. He plays for the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NBA is the top basketball league in the world. Before joining the NBA, he played college basketball for the Florida State Seminoles. Devin was born on August 23, 2000.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Devin Vassell grew up in Suwanee, Georgia. He went to Peachtree Ridge High School. In his final year of high school, Devin was an amazing player. He scored about 21.6 points and grabbed 8.9 rebounds in each game. Because of his great performance, he was named the regional Player of the Year. Devin decided to play college basketball at Florida State. He chose them over other schools like Texas Tech and North Florida.

College Basketball Career

Starting at Florida State

When Devin first started at Florida State, he was a freshman. He averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. He was also the best freshman in his conference at shooting three-pointers. He made 41.9% of his three-point shots. On December 17, 2018, he scored his highest points of the season, getting 16 points in a game. This helped his team win against Southeast Missouri State. Devin even made a game-tying three-pointer with only 4.5 seconds left. This shot sent the game into overtime, and his team won 65–63.

Becoming a Star Player

In his second year, Devin became a starter for the Florida State Seminoles. He was named the best player of the 2019 Emerald Coast Classic tournament. He scored 16 points against Chicago State. He also scored 13 points against the 17th-ranked Tennessee team. Then, he scored another 13 points against Purdue in the final game.

As the season went on, Devin's excellent play made people think he could be a top pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He scored a new career-high of 18 points against Virginia. His team won that game 54–50. In the very next game, he set another new career high. He scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Miami. For his great play, he was named the ACC co-Player of the Week. On February 1, 2020, Devin had an incredible game against Virginia Tech. He scored 27 points and made all seven of his three-point shots!

At the end of the college season, Devin was chosen for the Second Team All-ACC. He led his team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game. He also led them in rebounds, with 5.1 per game. He was second on the team in blocks, assists, and steals. After the season ended, Devin decided to enter the 2020 NBA draft.

Joining the San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs picked Devin Vassell as the 11th overall player in the 2020 NBA draft. He officially signed with the Spurs on November 27, 2020. Devin played his first NBA game on December 23, 2020. He scored three points and grabbed three rebounds in a win against the Memphis Grizzlies. On April 17, 2021, Devin scored his season-high of 18 points. He also had three rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in a win over the Phoenix Suns.

Key Moments and Achievements

On February 26, 2022, Devin scored 22 points, which was his regular season high at the time. He also had five rebounds and four assists in a close game against the Miami Heat. On April 1, he scored 22 points again in a win against the Portland Trail Blazers. Later, in the NBA Play-In Tournament, Devin scored a season-high 23 points. However, his team lost to the New Orleans Pelicans, which meant they did not make it to the playoffs.

On November 4, 2022, Devin scored a new career-high of 29 points against the Los Angeles Clippers. He matched this score on November 17 against the Sacramento Kings. In January 2023, Devin had a small surgery on his left knee. He returned to play on March 2, 2023, helping his team win against the Indiana Pacers. On March 19, 2023, he scored 29 points again.

On October 2, 2023, Devin Vassell and the Spurs agreed to a big contract. It was a five-year deal worth $146 million. This was the largest contract in the history of the Spurs team! Devin's father, Andrew Vassell, also played college basketball. He played for Stony Brook. Devin's family has roots in Jamaica, specifically from a place called Runaway Bay.
