Devro plc is a big company that makes special products from something called collagen. Collagen is a natural protein found in animals. Devro is known for making Sausage casings, which are the skins around sausages. They are a world leader in making these casings.

The company also creates other collagen products. These include special films and casings used in healthcare and for beauty products. Devro's main office is in Moodiesburn, Chryston, Scotland. In 2023, another company called SARIA bought Devro.

How Devro Started

Devro began as a new part of Johnson & Johnson in 1960. Researchers at Johnson & Johnson found a way to make sausage casings from collagen. This new material was very useful.

The name "Devro" comes from "Development and Research Organisation." This was the name of the Johnson & Johnson team that created the new collagen material.

Becoming an Independent Company

In 1991, Devro became an independent company. Its managers bought it from Johnson & Johnson for about £108 million. Two years later, in 1993, Devro's shares were listed on the London Stock Exchange. This meant people could buy and sell parts of the company.

Growing Through Acquisitions

Devro grew by buying other companies. In 1996, it bought an American company called Teepak International. This deal included Teepak's share in a Czech company named Cutisin. Devro fully bought Cutisin in 2004.

In 2015, Devro bought PVI Industries, a company from the Netherlands that also made collagen products. This deal cost about £10 million.

Leadership Changes

Peter Page was the Chief Executive of Devro for almost 11 years. He stepped down from his role in February 2018. Rutger Helbing, who used to be the company's Finance Director, took over as the new Chief Executive.

Being Bought by SARIA

In November 2022, Devro agreed to be bought by SARIA Bio-Industries AG & Co. KG. The deal was worth £540 million. The purchase was completed in April 2023.
