After high school, Brazelton played college baseball at Middle Tennessee State University. In 1999, he also played summer baseball for the Harwich Mariners. This team is part of the Cape Cod Baseball League, which is a well-known league for college players.
Starting His Professional Baseball Journey
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose Dewon Brazelton as their third overall pick in the 2001 MLB draft. This was a very high pick, showing how talented he was.
Brazelton made his first appearance in Major League Baseball on September 13, 2002. In 2004, he received the Tony Conigliaro Award. This award is given to a player who has overcome challenges to succeed in baseball.
Moving to the San Diego Padres
In 2005, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays traded Brazelton to the San Diego Padres. He was traded for another player named Sean Burroughs. This trade happened during the annual baseball winter meetings.
Playing for the Padres
In the spring of 2006, Brazelton played very well during spring training. He had a good record and earned a spot as a starting pitcher for the Padres. He was one of the top four pitchers on the team.
However, his first two games that season were tough. He struggled and gave up many hits and runs. Because of this, he was moved to the bullpen. The bullpen is where relief pitchers wait to enter the game.
Brazelton pitched better as a reliever for a while. But in a game on May 11, 2006, he struggled again. After that game, he was sent to the Padres' minor league team, the Portland Beavers. He has not pitched in the major leagues since then.
Later Career
After leaving the Padres, Brazelton signed minor league contracts with other teams. These included the Kansas City Royals in 2006 and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007. He also signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008, but he was released during spring training.
In 2009, Brazelton played for the Camden Riversharks. This team is part of an independent baseball league. In 2010, he signed with the Kansas City T-Bones, another independent league team. He played only two games for them before becoming a free agent.
