Early Life and Family
Dezső Pattantyús-Ábrahám came from an old and respected family. His family had used the name "Ábrahám" since the 1600s. They even received a special title of nobility, "danckai," from Michael I Apafi, who was a Prince of Transylvania.
His parents were László Ábrahám and Erzsébet Király. He also had a younger brother named Ernő Pattantyús-Ábrahám, who became a writer.
Political Career and Public Service
Dezső Pattantyús-Ábrahám became a member of the Diet of Hungary, which was like their parliament, from 1906 to 1918. He represented the area of Karcag.
Later, he was appointed as a state secretary in the Ministry of Justice. This happened when Mihály Károlyi was leading the government. He worked on important discussions about the rights of different national groups in Hungary. He met with Romanian leaders in Arad as part of a special committee.
Role in the Counter-Revolutionary Government
During a time when Hungary had a government called the Hungarian Soviet Republic, Dezső Pattantyús-Ábrahám moved to Szeged. There, he became the Prime Minister of a different government, often called the "counter-revolutionary" government.
His government played a big role in history by making Miklós Horthy the Supreme Commander of the National Army. After this, he served as a state secretary in the Ministry of the Interior under the Károly Huszár government.
Later Years and Challenges
After 1920, Dezső Pattantyús-Ábrahám took a break from politics for a while. He worked as a lawyer until 1944. He tried to get elected again several times during these years but was not successful.
In November 1944, during World War II, members of the Arrow Cross Party held him in different places, including Sopronkőhida and then Germany. He was able to return home to Hungary in 1945.
After returning, he helped start a new political group called the Hungarian Freedom Party. In 1947, he became a member of the National Assembly again, which was a big return to politics after nearly 30 years.
However, he faced difficulties and was later removed from his party in 1949. He then decided to leave his position in parliament and retired from politics that same year.
He was later held in Tarcal in 1951. In 1957, he was warned by authorities because he was involved in trying to restart the Freedom Party during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He continued to work as a lawyer until 1958.
Dezső Pattantyús-Ábrahám also had connections with American and English diplomats. Because of this, the police warned him again in 1967. Two years before he passed away, Hungarian intelligence agencies stopped watching him.
Dezső Pattantyús-Ábrahám died in Budapest, Hungary, on July 25, 1973, at the age of 98.
