Dharamvir Bharati (born December 25, 1926 – died September 4, 1997) was a very famous Indian writer. He was a talented poet, author, and playwright who wrote in Hindi. He was also a deep thinker about society. For many years, from 1960 to 1987, he was the main editor of a popular Hindi weekly magazine called Dharmayug.

Bharati received the Padma Shree award in 1972 from the Indian government for his amazing work in literature. His novel Gunaho Ka Devta became a classic, meaning it's a book that people love and read for a long time. Another one of his novels, Suraj ka Satwan Ghoda, was special because of its unique way of telling stories. It was even made into a movie in 1992 by Shyam Benegal.

His play Andha Yug is a classic that is often performed by drama groups. It tells a powerful story set right after the great Mahabharata war. In 1988, he also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his plays, which is a big honor for artists in India.

Early Life and Education

Dharamvir Bharati was born on December 25, 1926, in Allahabad, India. His family faced money problems after his father passed away when he was young. He had one sister, Dr. Veerbala.

He studied Hindi at Allahabad University and earned his Master's degree in 1946. He was very good at his studies and won an award for getting the highest marks in Hindi.

Starting His Career

While studying, Dharamvir Bharati worked as a sub-editor for magazines like Abhyudaya and Sangam. Later, in 1954, he completed his PhD. His research was about "Siddha Sahitya," which is a type of old literature. After getting his PhD, he became a lecturer in Hindi at Allahabad University.

The 1950s were a very creative time for Bharati. He wrote many novels, plays, poems, and essays during these years.

Journalism in Mumbai

In 1960, Bharati moved to Mumbai (then called Bombay) to become the chief editor of the popular Hindi weekly magazine Dharmayug. This magazine was published by the Times Group. He stayed as the editor of Dharmayug until 1987.

During his time as editor, Dharmayug became the most popular Hindi weekly magazine in India. It reached new heights in Hindi journalism. As a reporter, Bharati even covered the war between India and Pakistan that led to the creation of Bangladesh.

Personal Life

Dr. Bharati got married in 1954. He had a daughter named Parmita with his first wife, Kanta Bharati. Later, he remarried and had a son, Kinshuk Bharati, and another daughter, Pragya Bharati, with his second wife, Pushpa Bharati.

Dharamvir Bharati had heart problems and sadly passed away in 1997 after a short illness.
