Diablo Grande is a special kind of community in Stanislaus County, California. It's called a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a place the government counts for population, but it's not an official city. It's a gated community, meaning it has controlled entrances, and many people who live there travel to nearby cities for work.

Diablo Grande is located in the Diablo Range mountains, which is where it gets its name. It sits quite high up, at about 1,535 feet (468 meters) above sea level. It's about 9 miles (14 kilometers) southwest of a town called Patterson. In 2020, about 1,669 people lived there.

Diablo Grande's Story

Diablo Grande was planned as a special community with homes and golf courses. It was started by a developer named Don Panoz. The city council in Patterson first saw plans for it in 1990. The project was officially approved in 1993.

Challenges and Changes

Building Diablo Grande wasn't always easy. In 1999, a court said the plans didn't protect the environment enough. Also, there was a big question about where the community would get enough water, as the area didn't have much. To solve this, Diablo Grande created its own water district. They also arranged to get water from land that used to be used for farming. Plus, a large area of 12,000 acres was set aside to protect wildlife.

The original idea for Diablo Grande was very big. It was supposed to have thousands of homes, a fancy hotel, six golf courses, places for horses, vineyards, and even a technology park. However, after a big money problem in 2008, the people who invested in the community had to declare bankruptcy. Many homes faced problems, and there were millions of dollars in unpaid bills.

Later in 2008, a company called World International LLC bought Diablo Grande. In 2009, there was a temporary stop to new building because water tests showed slightly high levels of a certain chemical.

Golf Courses and New Plans

Diablo Grande had famous golf courses, including one designed by golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Gene Sarazen. Sadly, this course closed in 2014 because of a long period of drought in California.

In 2017, the plans for the community were updated. Instead of building homes all over the hills, new homes would be grouped together. This would leave more open spaces and walking trails. The new plan allowed for a total of 2,354 homes.

By 2019, the last remaining golf course at Diablo Grande also closed. The company that owned it, World International, was looking for a new owner because of unpaid taxes. In May 2020, a new company, Angel's Crossing, LLC, bought much of the property.

Recent Events

In August 2020, people living in Diablo Grande had to leave their homes for a short time. This was because of large wildfires nearby, called the SCU Lightning Complex fires. Luckily, the evacuation order was lifted the very next day.
