The diademed amazon (Amazona diadema) is a beautiful parrot that lives in the Amazonas state of north-western Brazil. It belongs to the parrot family called Psittacidae.

This parrot used to be thought of as the same kind of bird as the red-lored amazon. But now, scientists believe it is its own unique species.

What Does the Diademed Amazon Look Like?

The diademed amazon is about 33 cm (13 in) long. That's about the length of a school ruler!

It is mostly a bright green bird. But it also has splashes of red and black. Many of its feathers have different colored edges. This makes them look like they have a cool, scalloped pattern.

  • Its head, neck, chest, and belly are green.
  • The front of its head and the area around its beak are red. This red color does not go above its eyes.
  • Its main wing feathers are dark black.
  • The feathers closer to its body are bluish-green.
  • The first five feathers on its wings have red at their base. This creates a flash of red when the bird flies!
  • Its tail is green. The feathers on the sides of its tail have yellowish-green tips and red at their base.
  • The beak is dark grey.
  • The skin around its eyes is white.
  • Its eyes are orange.
  • Its legs and feet are light grey.

Where Does the Diademed Amazon Live?

The diademed amazon is only found in the Amazon basin in northern Brazil. Its home is mainly around the lower part of the Rio Negro river and the upper part of the Amazon River. This area is all within the state of Amazonas.

You can find these parrots in different types of lowland forests. They also live in areas with scattered trees and even in plantations. For example, they are common in the tall trees of humid forests near Manaus. They can also be seen around the edges of woodlands.

How Does the Diademed Amazon Live?

These parrots mostly eat fruits and nuts. They probably behave a lot like the red-lored amazon.

  • Outside of the time when they are raising babies, these birds gather together to sleep at night.
  • Every day, they fly from their sleeping spots to places where they can find food.
  • They look for food high up in the trees.
  • Their green feathers help them blend in very well with the leaves. This makes them hard to spot!

Is the Diademed Amazon in Danger?

The diademed amazon lives in a small area. Its home is being lost because forests are being cut down. People are clearing the land to make space for cattle farms and to grow soybeans.

Some of these parrots are also caught and sold as pets. This is part of the pet trade.

However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has looked at the bird's situation. They have decided that the diademed amazon is a "least concern" species. This means that for now, it is not considered to be in serious danger of disappearing.
