The Eschscholzia rhombipetala, also known as the diamond-petaled California poppy, is a special flower. It is only found naturally in California. This means it is endemic to the state.
This poppy is a close relative of the more common California poppy. However, the diamond-petaled California poppy has much smaller flowers.
A Plant's Comeback Story
For a while, people thought the diamond-petaled California poppy had disappeared forever. It was believed to be extinct. But then, in the 1990s, something amazing happened. This rare poppy was found again!
Where the Poppy Was Rediscovered
Scientists rediscovered the poppy in two main places:
- In the northern part of the Carrizo Plain. This area is in San Luis Obispo County, located in central California.
- At the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This site is in Alameda County, which is part of the East San Francisco Bay Area.
Finding this poppy again was very exciting for plant lovers and scientists. It showed that even plants thought to be gone can sometimes make a comeback.
